Led by senior setter Maleah Faust and junior outside hitter Alina Hunter, the Wiseburn Da Vinci girls volleyball team rallied to defeat Arrowhead Christian Academy 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19 on Saturday night to capture the CIF Southern Section Division 6 championship.
“We came in as an at-large bid and we went back to our original goal – get that banner so we can put it up next to the boys’,” Wiseburn Da Vinci coach Mylah Wessels said. “We didn’t win league and these girls didn’t believe, but once they got into the playoffs they started to shine.”
Including the match-winner, Hunter totaled 22 kills as Wiseburn Da Vinci (21-15 overall) earned just its second CIF Southern section team title.
Wessels’ husband, Jeff, coached Wiseburn Da Vinci’s boys volleyball team to the CIF-SS Division 5 title in 2023. It was the only previous section championship for the school, which opened in 2017.
“This is a big deal, especially since we started as volunteer coaches,” Mylah Wessels said. “These girls, I’ve been with them since Day 1 and they have been stellar.”
Hunter helped Wiseburn Da Vinci get out to a 4-0 start to the match, but Arrowhead Christian 6-foot-2 junior Josie Weirs had five blocks to create momentum and the Eagles rode the crowd’s energy to a win in the first set.
“Our gym is loud (and) it’s crazy,” Arrowhead Christian coach Brittney Amey said. “The crowd is always something we have to talk about, and having composure.”
Wessels made a tactical change, dropping Hunter off of the front line and working other hitters into the match. Senior Callie Merrill and sophomore Gabriel Kim got into a hitting groove, and Hunter started picking her spots before smashing the set winner as Wiseburn Da Vinci evened the score at one apiece.
“A lot of nerves (and) a lot of emotions but by changing the lineup a little bit and mixing in a few more girls, we got some incredible plays,” Wessels said.
Junior Natalia Malek contributed three kills, and Hunter had five more kills to help WDV win a back-and-forth third set and take the lead before dominating the fourth and final set with six more kills.
“Alina is by far the best terminator on our team,” Wessels said. “She will put a ball down. She will take care of everything.”
Faust had 17 assists, six kills and three aces for Wiseburn Da Vinci, and was the key to the Wolves switching the point of attack to neutralize Weirs and Arrowhead Christian’s middle blockers.
Weirs finished with a match-high 14 blocks for ACA (18-12), which was making its second finals appearance in four years. The Eagles previously won the Division 6 title in 2022.
