A student at Vista del Lago High in Moreno Valley was arrested Thursday morning, May 1, after bringing an airsoft gun to school, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
The Sheriff’s Department did not identify the school by name, only by its location in the 15000 block of Lasselle Street. But Vista del Lago principal Matthew McCain acknowledged the incident in a message to parents posted on social media.
Deputies went to the campus at 9:39 a.m. after receiving a report of a fight, said Sgt. Wenndy Brito-Gonzalez, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman. Deputies then learned a student may have had a firearm.
Four videos shot from different angles and posted to social media show students and security guards tackling somebody in a hallway.
Deputies found what turned out to be an airsoft gun, Brito-Gonzalez said, which is a replica firearm designed to shoot small plastic projectiles, often during sporting games.
Paramedics treated the student for injuries suffered in a fight before he was booked into Juvenile Hall on suspicion of battery and displaying an imitation firearm in school, Brito-Gonzalez said.
McCain said in his message that replica firearms are not allowed on campus.
“We ask families to speak to their child(ren) about what is appropriate to bring onto a school campus,” McCain wrote.
