A San Bernardino man serving time for robbery was arrested Monday, May 26, on suspicion of escaping from a Los Angeles County fire camp over the weekend.
Angel Gaxiola, 33, was taken into custody without incident around 8:20 a.m. by officers with the Upland Police Department, according to a California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation statement.
Officials said Gaxiola was discovered missing around 9 p.m. Saturday during a head count at Holton Conservation Camp in Sylmar, California.
The camp is a low-security facility where incarcerated people help with wildfire prevention and firefighting.
An emergency count confirmed he was gone, prompting a search by state correctional agents and local law enforcement.
Gaxiola had been serving a six-year sentence for second-degree robbery. He was sentenced in San Bernardino County in 2023 and housed at the camp since Jan. 22, 2025.
The case will be referred to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for possible escape charges.
