INGLEWOOD — Three weeks into the season, Tutu Atwell seemed like the forgotten man in the Rams’ receiver room. Even after signing a $10 million deal to return to the team, Atwell had one catch through three games. And Sunday’s matchup with the Indianapolis Colts started much the same way, with one target resulting in an incompletion.
But with the game tied and less than two minutes to play, Atwell’s man stumbled as he made the break in his corner route. And no one is catching Tutu Atwell when he has a head start.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford lofted the ball up to the speedy receiver, then soon was running after him, arms spread wide in delirium as Atwell ran for an 88-yard touchdown and a 27-20 Rams win, punctuated by Cam Kurl’s second interception of the game to seal it.
The Rams had led at halftime, 13-10, after a two-minute drill ended with a Davante Adams touchdown. But despite some help from the Colts in the second half, namely a goal-line fumble by Adonai Mitchell that turned a touchdown into a touchback, the Rams could not add to the lead with just two first downs on five possessions.
The Colts took advantage, scoring on a touchdown pass to Michael Pittman to take the lead, then adding a field goal to make it a seven-point advantage after a fumbled handoff between Stafford and Kyren Williams gave the Colts ideal field position.
Back against the wall, Stafford came to life and began to look for receiver Puka Nacua. Leading the NFL in most receiving categories this year and adding 13 catches for 170 yards Sunday, Nacua reached the end zone through the air for the first time on a fourth-and-goal play to tie it up.
Taking advantage of a few Colts penalties, the Rams defense got off the field and put the ball back into Stafford’s hands. And it took him exactly one play to give the Rams the win, with a little help from the fastest player on the field.
