“We are very grateful for Giovana’s contributions to CSUB Volleyball,” Conder said. “Her impact on our student-athletes, campus, and community will resonate for years to come. During her time at CSUB, she led the volleyball program in a way that was testament to our mission, vision, and core values. We are thankful for Giovana’s leadership and wish her future success.”
Melo’s 11-year stint in Bakersfield will come to an end with her decision to leave, but the `Runners are in capable hands in the interim with Angus and Nogueira, both of whom have head coaching experience at the collegiate level.
“I am excited for Cinthia and Felipe to lead our program as we move forward,” Conder said. “Both Cinthia and Felipe will guide CSUB Volleyball during this important time.”
Cal State Bakersfield enjoyed immediate success under Melo’s watch in 2014 as the first-year Head Coach led CSUB to the NCAA Tournament for the first time at the Division I level. Three years later, Melo returned her squad to the national tournament, making CSUB Volleyball the Athletics Department’s first program to reach NCAAs twice since the move to DI.
At the helm of the `Runners, Melo produced one conference Player of the Year, 20 All-Conference selections, and 39 Academic All-Conference honorees. She led CSUB to 131 victories, making her the second-winningest coach in program history.
Melo has accepted the Associate Head Coach position at another institution.
