In the rematch Tuesday, Los Osos never let host Etiwanda get that close, in a 25-20, 25-23, 25-21 victory.
The victory gives the Grizzlies (19-5 overall, 6-0 in league) firm control of the Baseline League over Etiwanda (19-12, 4-2).
Los Osos coach Destiney Mebane said her team was different this time around in trying to close out the Eagles.
“I think (we had) more mental toughness. We were really locked in, especially with our passing,” Mebane said. “That broke down in the third set the first time we played them. They (Grizzlies) have been working hard in the gym.”
Mebane, an Etiwanda graduate, is in her third season as head coach at Los Osos. The Grizzlies didn’t make the playoffs the first two seasons but are gelling this year with good team chemistry bolstered by three transfers: sophomore outside hitter Josslyn Jacks and senior middle blocker Ginger Stencel from Ontario Christian and sophomore libero Annaly Landeros from Chino Hills.
“The chemistry is what we were missing last year. The chemistry this year between all the girls has been great. It’s like they’ve been playing together for years,” Mebane said.
In the first set, Los Osos didn’t trail after the first 10 points. Sophomore Chloe Taylor had a big kill in the set that got the Grizzlies to set point.
In set two, the Eagles led as late as 19-18 before Los Osos went on a 5-0 run that included two kills by Taylor. Again she had a kill on an epically long point that got Los Osos to set point. Senior Rylee Hernandez had the set-winning kill.
Etiwanda got off to a quick start in the third set, leading 5-2, before an 11-5 Los Osos run gave the Grizzlies a commanding 19-14 lead. On back-to-back points in that run, the Eagles couldn’t handle big swings from Los Osos and digs hit the ceiling or basketball hoop, leading to the Grizzlies winning the point.
“That’s a control issue,” Etiwanda coach Savannah Flores said. “I felt like my team was making really good reads defensively, we just weren’t using good technique.”
Los Osos was led by Taylor (13 kills, seven digs and two aces), Jacks (13 kills, two blocks, 10 digs), Hernandez (seven kills, two aces and 14 digs), Landeros (13 digs, three assists), and senior Kayla Scott (20 assists, six digs and two aces).
Etiwanda, the defending league champion, was led by Mya Yaisrael (five kills), Lauren Furnald (six kills, four aces and eight digs) and Olivia Zajicek (eight digs).
“They run their back-row attack really well and that can throw a defense off,” Flores said of Los Osos. “Those are big impact plays. They’re in system a lot.
“For us, moving forward, we’ll go to CIF and prepare for that.”
