Registered Independent voters who successfully supported candidate Donald J Trump last November: I have just one question for you. Is this what you wanted?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky being publicly humiliated on television by President Trump at the White House for not being sufficiently appreciative of U.S. aid. Zelensky was then asked to leave and not return until he was ready to seek peace in the war with Russia, who Trump now seemingly supports.
USAID is threatened with a complete shutdown. It will literally lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of women, children and the elderly worldwide who depend on USAID as their primary source of food and medicine.
The National Park System has been thrown into chaos with massive cuts among full-time employees, threatened closure of some parks, uncleaned bathrooms and on-again, off-again hiring of temporary employees.
Elon Musk’s young bucks – often with no security clearances – are seeking access to sensitive personal tax information at the Internal Revenue Service.
A tax plan with an estimated $4 trillion in income tax cuts over the next 10 years, will mostly benefit the rich, while untold billions likely will have been held back from state Medicaid programs and Food Stamps that help the poor and disabled to survive.
A total cut-off in federal funds is threatened for any school or college that has any sign of a diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policy, allows ethnic groups to have an organization on campus or scholarships designated for ethnic or religious minorities.
The Associated Press, the worldwide news service universally acknowledged as the least biased of any news medium, is banned from being a part of the White House Press Pool and other events because it will not accept the Trump demand that The AP call the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.
The Ukrainian government was pressured to sign over future mineral rights revenues in the billions to repay the U.S. for past and potentially future military assistance.
Trump’s Ambassador to the United Nations sided with Russia, North Korea and Iran, our country’s one-time sworn enemies and the worst dictatorships on earth, in refusing to support a U.N. resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine three years ago.
A requirement, since “sort of” abandoned, maybe, was instituted for all federal employees to email five bullet points about their accomplishments for the past week to their supervisors and Musk so an unidentified AI system can evaluate if their job is critical. If you don’t send the bullet points to your supervisor and Musk? You have effectively resigned your position.
FBI agents who worked on any case involving President Trump prior to his reelection were required to outline what they did, with the risk of being fired for taking part in fully legal and authorized investigations.
These actions–and many more–sound like stories from the satirical Onion, but they aren’t.
Nearly 80 lawsuits have been filed by unions, civil rights groups and others seeking to stop these actions, most against the so-called Department of Government Efficiency.
The Institute for Public Integrity, which is tracking all the cases brought against the Administration, reports that the Trump Administration has lost an astonishing 93% so far. Historically the federal government wins 70% of the cases in which it is sued. Many of the restraining orders and preliminary injunctions have been granted by Trump-appointed judges.
The institute says the Administration has lost the cases most often because the ill-conceived actions by Trump, Musk and their minions have been “arbitrary, capricious or otherwise illegal.”
Most people likely agree there is some level of “waste, fraud and abuse” at any level of government, and would like to eliminate or at least minimize it. Many might also like to see a smaller and more efficient government.
But that is not what Trump is doing. Openly supported by the President, Musk is proudly taking what he boasts is a chainsaw approach, not a scalpel as one embarrassed Republican Congressional member suggested this week. Events are changing so chaotically, that by the time you read this, more cases were likely filed and the courts have taken new actions.
Still happy with your vote? If not, write to your Congress member and the White House and let them know.
