
A gas leak caused a home to explode in Chino Hills on Sunday, fire officials have determined.
Crews that responded around 3:45 p.m. to an explosion in the 4200 block of Sierra Vista Drive found major damage to one home and minor damage, including shattered windows, at five neighboring homes, according to the Chino Valley Fire District.
The source of the gas leak is undetermined, the Fire District said.
Three adults and six children who range in age from 6 to 15 were injured, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. The victims were inside the home at the time of the explosion, and their injuries were not life threatening, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Officials transported some of the victims, and others went to the hospital in a personal vehicle, the Fire District said. ,
Officials evacuated 16 nearby homes as a precaution while Southern California Gas shut off gas to the area.
The gas leak was stopped around 10:45 p.m., and residents of the unaffected homes were allowed back at 11 p.m., the Fire District said.
Sierra Vista Drive was closed for around seven hours between Del Norte and Descanso avenues while crews worked.
