Any reasonable person knows that President Donald Trump’s comments on the murder of Rob and Michele Reiner have been, to use a word, deplorable.
In a message amplified through official accounts, Trump said Reiner died “reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding and incurable affliction … known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
Fortunately, some Republicans found this to be a tasteless and irresponsible thing to say.
Rep. Mike Lawler of New York, for example, said, “This statement is wrong. Regardless of one’s political views, no one should be subjected to violence, let alone at the hands of their own son.”
Rep. Don Bacon likewise said, “The couple were stabbed to death. Most Americans want more and better from our President.”
These are pretty obvious reactions and demonstrate signs of life in the GOP.
So, I figured I’d ask local Republican members of Congress what they think. Their response: crickets.
Rep. Young Kim has been posting on social media, declaring on one account today, “Our firefighters deserve every tool accessible to save lives, protect property, and keep our communities safe. I’m dedicated to supporting these brave heroes and first responders with every resource they need to stop the threats posed by wildfires!”
And on another, a condemnation of “insider perks” members of Congress. Which is pretty funny considering recent news she failed to properly disclose $50,000 in sponsored trips.
But on this? Nothing.
I checked with Rep. Ken Calvert, who has been busy condemning the antisemitic terrorism in Australia on social media. But of the murder of a legendary American director and subsequent denigration by the president of the United States?
Nothing.
I figured Rep. Darrell Issa, ever the party loyalist, wouldn’t say anything, but asked anyway. He’s busy condemning South Korea on social media, so surely he can direct that energy to an obviously dumb statement from the president right? Of course not.
Finally, because there are only so many Southern California Republicans in Congress, I checked with Rep. Jay Obernolte. Given his previous unwillingness to condemn Nick Fuentes when asked, I also figured he wouldn’t have anything to say on this.
I was right, no response.
Considering Obernolte once developed specifically family-friendly video games, it seems like a softball to at least mildly critique a grotesque statement smearing a man who was just murdered. Oh well.
Now, look, I get it. They really want to keep their jobs and if/when a couple of them lose in the midterms, they really want the option to land a position in the Trump administration. They don’t want to go back to the private sector and be alone with their thoughts. But it makes me wonder: What’s the point of Republicans if they can’t even take an obvious stand?
It’s as though Republicans are more concerned with short-term appeasement of one man than the long-term repercussions of what they’re enabling and participating in.
It’s something to think about.
