News reports keep talking over and over about the “insufficient resources” and live shots on TV  showing neighborhoods and people trying to fight the fire with garden hoses on their own saying “where are the firetrucks?” It seems there is a possible solution no one is talking about. the Los Angeles Fire Department actually has a section for “volunteer“ including “CERT“ community emergency response teams that includes training in subjects like fire suppression. During the latest press conference, the fire chief just admitted that we don’t have enough firemen to handle this. So why can’t we train thousands of volunteers?…

We all grow up somewhere, and that place shapes us. I grew up in Altadena, a magical place, and now it is gone. The first two homes I lived in — a little dingbat stucco on Sunny Oaks Circle across the street from the Angeles National Forest, my parents’ first house, and then the one they built down the block, designed by second-generation Altadena architect Harold Bissner, a midcentury modern, back when a rocket scientist and a librarian could afford to build such a home, in a gorgeous oak grove — are gone. So is the midcentury mod up the…

On Thursday morning at the White House, President Joe Biden told reporters he talked to Gov. Gavin Newsom about fire hydrants running dry as fires raged out of control across Los Angeles County. The president said he learned that it’s not a water shortage that’s causing the problem. “The fact is, the utilities understandably shut off power because they’re worried the lines that carry the energy were going to be blown down and spark additional fires,” Biden said. “When they did that, it cut off the ability to generate pumping the water.”“That’s what caused the lack of water in these hydrants,”…

Years from now when historians consider Gavin Newsom’s time as California’s governor they should start their research with his budget release press conference from the beginning of this past week. It hit all of the themes of Newsom’s governorship, none of which were good. Starting nearly an hour late on Monday, Newsom unveiled topline numbers for his draft budget at a release he shoehorned into a previously-planned, unrelated stop in Turlock. Anything beyond a few topline numbers was deferred until another press conference held on Friday, one he didn’t plan to attend. Why two press conferences? Why was he so…

By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis WriterMELBOURNE, Australia — When Carlos Alcaraz is on court for a training session, perhaps working on his newly revamped service motion, he’s doing so to buttress a game already good enough to claim four Grand Slam titles. He’s also got his young rival, Jannik Sinner, in mind.“The good thing for me is, when I’m seeing him winning titles, when I’m seeing him in the top of the ranking, it forces me to practice even harder every day. In practice, I’m just thinking (about) the things that I have to improve to play against him,” Alcaraz said…

The devastating wildfires ripping through the Los Angeles area are, first and foremost, a human tragedy, and all thoughts should be with both the victims as well as the first responders. And while the full scale of the devastation is yet to be seen, there is undoubtedly a political aspect at play, particularly for California Gov. Gavin Newsom. Indeed, Newsom’s leadership during the state’s most horrific natural disaster in at least a century will have a lasting impact on not only his governorship, but also his White House ambitions, which I discussed last week in these pages. To be clear, the introduction of…
