Growth of the Palisades fire slowed significantly overnight into Sunday while crews made significant gains in containing the Eaton fire, as firefighters entered their sixth day of battling the deadly, wind-driven blazes that have raged across Los Angeles County.Crews — aided by aerial water drops — were taking advantage of relatively lesser winds, before the return of dangerously gusty and dry weather is expected to once again increase the fire danger over the next several days. The Palisades fire — which had forced a new wave of evacuations as it lit up the ridge line in Mandeville Canyon — grew by…

Well, they’re at it again. Progressive journalists at the San Francisco Chronicle – but I repeat myself – have come up with a new label for constitutional limits on tax increases. They’ve declared these limits to be “tax subsidies.”Since when is keeping more of your own money a “subsidy?”Of course, this latest report is yet another attack on Proposition 13. Progressive journalists continue to be baffled that voters stubbornly support Prop. 13, the 1978 initiative that many reporters simply misunderstand. The Chronicle’s piece begins, “Since the late 1970s, many California property owners have received large property tax subsidies thanks to…
Once upon a time, Californians were told that by 2020 they would see a high-speed rail line connecting Los Angeles and San Francisco for as little as $33 billion. Well, it’s 2025 and if Californians are so lucky they might be able to experience the high-speed rail line from Bakersfield to Merced in 2033. You know, because that’s practically the same as what voters were promised. Oh and the project is set to cost more than $100 billion, not $33 billion. If California’s leaders were rational, they would have cut our losses long ago and at minimum gone back to…
Americans are watching the TV news with horror and sadness as tales unfold of the wildfires that are sweeping across Southern California. The latest reports point to 10 deaths, thousands of destroyed buildings and perhaps $135 billion in total damages. Then there’s the incomparable toll on residents who continue to endure this tragedy. In a gentler era, Americans would be united in their expression of grief for the disaster victims, but these aren’t such times. Many politicians and pundits have started finger-pointing, often trading in half-truths and rumors. As the fires burn, we should all avoid ad hominem political attacks, but…

PARADISE — It was a scene all too familiar to anyone in Butte County.“Watching those towns burn on TV and listening to, ‘No rain in a long time; 85 mph winds; can’t get air support up … traveling three football fields a minute, … (It’s) exactly what we went through,” said Steve Crowder, the mayor of Paradise. The Camp Fire, which started because of a downed PG&E power line on Nov. 8, 2018, burned more than 153,000 acres, destroyed 13,500 homes and killed 85 people, effectively leveling Paradise and some surrounding communities. Crowder, who had been elected to the town council…
BRENTWOOD — The Brentwood home of Vice President Kamala Harris, which lies within a Palisades fire evacuation zone, may have made it a target for would-be burglars Saturday. HOUSTON — Veteran center Bradley Bozeman’s eyes welled with tears and his voice cracked as he talked about the Chargers’ 32-12 loss Saturday to the Houston Texans in an AFC wild-card game. Like many of his teammates, Bozeman expected more than just a one-and-done playoff appearance. After all, the Chargers had rocketed into the playoffs with three consecutive impressive victories, improved their seeding from sixth to fifth and completed the regular season with an 11-6 record in Jim Harbaugh’s first season as coach and Joe Hortiz’s first year as their general manager.More to the point, they had formed a tight bond,…
