ANAHEIM — Angels interim manager Ray Montgomery moved Zach Neto to a spot he figures the shortstop is going to occupy for much of his career. Neto got his first career start in the No. 3 spot in the lineup on Monday, with Mike Trout hitting in the leadoff spot that Neto had held for much of the season. “We’ll get a couple people on for you and you drive them in,” Montgomery said he told Neto. “That’s your job.” The No. 3 spot is typically reserved for a team’s best hitter, although many analysts these days argue that the best…

By KONSTANTIN TOROPIN and JOSHUA GOODMAN WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard detects and detains scores of drug-running vessels in the Caribbean every year in its role as the world’s drug police on the high seas. Now, that anti-narcotics mission may look vastly different after a U.S. military strike on a vessel off Venezuela. Trump administration officials asserted last week that gang members were smuggling drugs bound for America. The Trump administration has indicated more military strikes on drug targets could be coming, saying it is seeking to “wage war” on Latin American cartels it accuses of flooding the…

By KEN SWEET NEW YORK (AP) — Armen Kirakosian remembers the frustrations of his first job as a call center agent nearly 10 years ago: the aggravated customers, the constant searching through menus for information and the notes he had to physically write for each call he handled. Thanks to artificial intelligence, the 29-year-old from Athens, Greece, is no longer writing notes or clicking on countless menus. He often has full customer profiles in front of him when a person calls in and may already know what problem the customer has before even saying “hello.” He can spend more time…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CALIFORNIA On Sept. 9, 1850, California was admitted as the 31st state in the union. Here are a few things to celebrate about our 175-year-old home. State flag history On June 14, 1846, rebellious settlers marched on the Mexican garrison at Sonoma. They declared California to be a republic independent of Mexico. This became known as the Bear Flag Revolt, named for the hastily designed flag depicting a grizzly and a five-point star over a red bar and the words “California Republic.” The flag only flew until July 9, 1846, when it was learned that Mexico and the…

California Gov. Gavin Newsom secured a long-awaited win against President Trump after a federal judge in San Francisco barred soldiers from aiding in immigration arrests and other civilian law enforcement across the state. The decision follows months of feuding between Newsom and Trump, which recently escalated after the president deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles this past June. While the victory for Newsom and Democrats is clear, it also raises serious questions about how he and his party approach the issues of crime, law enforcement, and public order more generally.  Indeed – unless there is a policy response that…

A split U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to lift restrictions on indiscriminate immigration stops and arrests in Los Angeles also divided Southern California lawmakers and activists Monday, leaving some to decry the order as greenlighting racial profiling and others cheering what they say will be increased safety in the area. “I want the entire nation to hear me when I say this isn’t just an attack on the people of Los Angeles, this is an attack on every person in every city in this country,” L.A. Mayor Karen Bass said. “Today’s ruling is not only dangerous — it’s un-American and threatens…

LOS ANGELES — Coach DeShaun Foster can view the same statistics as any Joe Schmo with a keyboard. It’s a few keystrokes and a Google search away to see how the Bruins compare to the rest of college football through two weeks. And the results aren’t pretty. UCLA football’s scoring offense ranks 115th in the country. The Bruins (0-2) don’t fare much better stopping the ball either, ranking 110th in yards allowed per game. On third down, they’ve converted 5 of 24 attempts, dwelling in 126th nationally — and when stopping third-down attempts, UCLA is second worst in the FBS…
