By EDITH M. LEDERER and MARK BANCHEREAU UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The United States accused Rwanda on Friday of violating a U.S.-brokered peace agreement by backing a deadly new rebel offensive in the mineral-rich eastern Congo, and warned that the Trump administration will take action against “spoilers” of the deal. The remarks by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz came as more than 400 civilians have been killed since the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels escalated their offensive in eastern Congo’s South Kivu province, according to regional officials who also say that Rwandan special forces were in the strategic city…

Top Los Angeles Angels executives testified on Friday, Dec. 12 that they knew nothing about Tyler Skaggs’ opioid use or that a team communication staffer was providing Skaggs with illicit pills prior to the pitchers’ shocking 2019 death, as testimony in the high-profile wrongful death trial against the organization drew to a close. Molly Jolly, the team’s senior vice president of finance and administration, said she was “flabbergasted” to learn of the drug use involving an Angels employee and Skaggs. Jolly said that had she known about the drug use, she would have reported it to Major League Baseball. “We…
By STEPHEN GROVES WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican chair of the House Oversight Committee threatened Friday to begin contempt of Congress proceedings against former President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton if they refuse to appear for depositions as part of the committee’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein. Rep. James Comer, a Kentucky Republican, said in a statement late Friday that the Clintons had “delayed, obstructed, and largely ignored the Committee staff’s efforts to schedule their testimony” for several months and said the committee would begin proceedings to try to force them to testify if they don’t appear next week or schedule…
EL SEGUNDO — Lakers guard Austin Reaves will be sidelined for at least the next week – and presumably the team’s next two games – because of a calf injury. The team announced on Friday afternoon that Reaves was diagnosed with a “mild” left calf strain and would be reevaluated in about one week. The Lakers play the Phoenix Suns in Arizona on Sunday and the Utah Jazz in Salt Lake City on Thursday. They’ll return to Southern California for a matchup against the Clippers at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood on Saturday. Reaves has had a career-best start to…
New York is the 8th state found to have improperly issued commercial driver’s licenses to immigrants
By JOSH FUNK New York is the eighth state found to routinely issue commercial driver’s licenses to immigrants that are valid long after they are no longer legally authorized to be in the country, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Friday, and he threatened to withhold $73 million in highway funds unless the system is fixed and any flawed licenses are revoked. New York was the fourth state run by a Democratic governor called out publicly by Duffy in his effort to make sure truck and bus drivers are qualified to either haul passengers or 80,000 pounds of cargo down…
Santa Margarita reaches state final a year after being rocked by hazing scandal – San Bernardino Sun
Two images bookend Santa Margarita Catholic High School’s improbable journey from 2024’s scandal-ridden 5-7 season to a spot in the CIF State Open Division championship showdown with De La Salle on Saturday night and a game that has attracted national attention. One is after Santa Margarita’s 42-7 victory against Centennial in the CIF Southern Section Division I title game, first-year head coach Carson Palmer, the former Eagles standout, USC Heisman Trophy winner, NFL All-Pro quarterback, kneeling beside his players at the center of the Rose Bowl, leading the team in the “Our Father.” The second is the portrait revealed in…
The Transportation Security Administration is renewing Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s push to end a collective bargaining agreement with airport screening officers — the second such attempt this year and one that comes just a month after the longest government shutdown on record. The agency said Friday the move is based on a September memo from Noem that says TSA screeners “have a primary function of national security” and therefore should not engage in collective bargaining or be represented by a union. The American Federation of Government Employees swiftly vowed to fight the decision, calling it illegal and a violation…
EL SEGUNDO — Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was listed as a limited participant in the team’s practices on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but they dropped him from their final injury report of the week, which means he’s good to go for Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium. As if there were any doubt, right? Herbert has played all but four games since assuming the Chargers’ starting quarterback role in Week 2 of his rookie season in 2020. The only reason he didn’t play in those four games in 2023 was because he was physically unable to…
By MATT O’BRIEN MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (AP) — Robots have long been seen as a bad bet for Silicon Valley investors — too complicated, capital-intensive and “boring, honestly,” says venture capitalist Modar Alaoui. But the commercial boom in artificial intelligence has lit a spark under long-simmering visions to build humanoid robots that can move their mechanical bodies like humans and do things that people do. Alaoui, founder of the Humanoids Summit, gathered more than 2,000 people this week, including top robotics engineers from Disney, Google and dozens of startups, to showcase their technology and debate what it will take to…
