Although the Greatest Generation mostly is no longer with us, Americans always will remember the sacrifice that began Dec. 7, 1941. That’s when Imperial Japan attacked the U.S. bases at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, without warning. Of eight American battleships moored in the harbor, four were sunk and three damaged; 2,402 U.S. service members were killed, along with 57 civilians. A day after the attack, which President Roosevelt called “a date that will live in infamy,” Congress declared war on Japan, bringing the United States into World War II. Almost four hard-fought years later, 416,000 Americans lay dead from the fighting,…
If you’d ever like to visit a physical embodiment of the argument that government should get out and stay out of just about everything, take Interstate 15 from Southern California toward Las Vegas and stop near the Nevada border to gawk at the Ivanpah solar power plant. It looks like three alien amphitheatres, each sold-out with silver rectangular beings gazing at a spiky tower crowned with a glowing glass aquarium. On the ground, you may see the charred carcasses of birds that were sacrificed when they flew through the crowd’s hot gaze. There’s nothing alien about the thing’s origins. It’s…

Most of us don’t set out to make a mess of things. Life gets full, days get crowded and we tell ourselves we’ll deal with that one small thing tomorrow. If we’re honest, most messes don’t begin with big decisions — they begin with the tiny avoidances we think won’t matter. But they do. They always do. And when the mess finally becomes visible, many people interpret it as failure. Let me offer a different view: Messes aren’t failures – they’re invitations. Messes are signals that we’ve drifted off our path and an opportunity to return to ourselves more fully.…
One of America’s national treasures, Antiwar.com, turns 30 on Dec. 9. It was started in 1995 by libertarians Justin Raimondo, a prolific polemicist who died in 2019, and editor Eric Garris, with occasional pieces turning into daily updates in April 1998. I’ve been reading it every day since 1999, when it provided key insights into President Clinton’s senseless bombing of Serbia for 78 days during the Kosovo War. Raimondo wrote daily commentaries attacking the war, and Garris linked to stories from around the world. Clinton’s bombings in Serbia killed hundreds of Serbs and put the terrorist, drug-dealing Kosovo Liberation Army in…
