By MATTHEW DALY WASHINGTON (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency said Friday it is eliminating its research and development arm and reducing agency staff by thousands of employees. The agency’s Office of Research and Development has long provided the scientific underpinnings for EPA’s mission to protect the environment and human health. The EPA said in May it would shift its scientific expertise and research efforts to program offices that focus on major issues like air and water. The agency said Friday it is creating a new Office of Applied Science and Environmental Solutions that will allow it to focus on…

PHILADELPHIA — The Angels returned from the break doing exactly what they need to do. Taylor Ward’s tie-breaking two-run homer in the seventh inning pushed the Angels to a 6-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night. The Angels (48-49) have just 12 games left before the trade deadline. They began the day four games out of a playoff spot, needing a hot streak in the next two weeks to avoid a sell-off. This one didn’t start very well, with the Angels opting for a bullpen game and winding up in 4-1 hole by the third inning. The Angels…

By ANTHONY IZAGUIRRE The state of New York agreed Friday to pay $450,000 to settle a lawsuit from an ex-aide to former Gov. Andrew Cuomo who alleged Cuomo sexually harassed and groped her while he was in office. The former aide, Brittany Commisso, had sued Cuomo and the state, alleging sexual harassment from the then-governor and retaliation against her after reporting the incidents. The allegations were part of a barrage similar misconduct claims that forced Cuomo to resign as governor in 2021. Commisso’s lawyers said the settlement “is a complete vindication of her claims” and that Commisso is “glad to…

By DAVID BAUDER CBS says its decision to end Stephen Colbert’s late-night comedy show is financial, not political. Yet even with the ample skepticism about that explanation, there’s no denying the economics were not working in Colbert’s favor. The network’s bombshell announcement late Thursday that the “Late Show” will end next May takes away President Donald Trump’s most prominent TV critic and the most popular entertainment program in its genre. The television industry’s declining economic health means similar hard calls are already being made with personalities and programming, with others to be faced in the future. For the late-night genre,…

EL SEGUNDO — Tuli Tuipulotu arrived at his first Chargers training camp as a wide-eyed, 20-year-old second-round draft pick from USC. He approached veteran teammates and fellow outside linebackers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa and called them “sir” and “mister” with a sense of reverence. Tuipulotu made quite the first impression during the 2023 season, and it went far beyond being polite and respecting his elders in the locker room and on the field. He made his mark as a rookie, saying far more with his actions during practices and games than by opening his mouth. He was quiet and…

By LARRY NEUMEISTER NEW YORK (AP) — A former chief executive of two clothing technology companies who was once portrayed as an on-the-rise fashion entrepreneur has surrendered to face charges in an indictment unsealed Friday alleging that she cheated investors of over $300 million over the last six years. Christine Hunsicker, 48, of Lafayette, New Jersey, was charged with six counts, including fraud, aggravated identity theft and false statement charges in the indictment in Manhattan federal court. U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton said in a release that Hunsicker forged documents, fabricated audits and made material misrepresentations about her company’s financial condition…

By DAVID KLEPPER and KEVIN FREKING WASHINGTON (AP) — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth says bases in Indiana and New Jersey can house detained immigrants without affecting military readiness — a step toward potentially detaining thousands of people on bases on U.S. soil. Hegseth notified members of Congress from both states this week of the proposal to temporarily house detained immigrants at Camp Atterbury in Indiana, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst in New Jersey. President Donald Trump has moved to aggressively detain and deport people in the country illegally, a push that has swept up large numbers of immigrants, including many with…

PHILADELPHIA — Mike Trout returned from his four-day break feeling strong enough to do some work in right field. “It went good,” Trout said after about 10 minutes worth of drills on Friday. “Just like a slow progression to get my feet under me, and then hopefully be back in the outfield soon.” Trout, 33, has been limited to DH duty since returning from a bone bruise in his left knee on May 30. He did a couple of days worth of outfield drills a week after he returned, but felt enough discomfort that he stopped. He didn’t resume outfield…

Summer’s spending temptations abound: Longer days, travel and camp for kids are just a few of the places our money ends up during the warm months. “We have expenses in summer that we might not have the rest of the year,” says April Stewart, a financial coach who helps high earners take control of their money and build wealth. “A lot of times we tend to overspend when we aren’t intentional,” she adds. Stewart and other money experts say there’s still time to reign in expenses this summer — or as you plan ahead for next summer. Here’s how: 1.…
