By CLAIRE SAVAGE, Associated Press Marc Seawright took pride in his job at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, where he worked for more than eight years and most recently oversaw technology policy to support the agency’s mission of combating workplace harassment and discrimination. But then President Donald Trump began targeting transgender and nonbinary people within hours of returning to the White House by issuing a series of executive orders — including one declaring the existence of two unchangeable sexes. Seawright was ordered to develop technology to scrub any mention of LGBTQ+ identities from all EEOC outreach materials, which had been created to help employers understand…
By JEFF McMURRAY and LINLEY SANDERS, Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — When Elizabeth Rivera’s phone would ring during the overnight shift, it was usually because the bus didn’t show up again and one of her three kids needed a ride to school. After leaving early from her job at a Houston-area Amazon warehouse several times, Rivera was devastated — but not surprised — when she was fired. “Right now, I’m kind of depressed about it,” said Rivera, 42. “I’m depressed because of the simple fact that it’s kind of hard to find a job, and there’s bills I have to…
PITTSBURGH — Shohei Ohtani was feeling “under the weather” on Tuesday – and hit a ball 120 mph, the third-highest exit velocity in MLB this year and the hardest-hit ball by any Dodger in the Statcast era (since 2015). But he wasn’t up to pitching on Wednesday. The Dodgers scratched Ohtani from his scheduled start against the Pittsburgh Pirates, though he was in the lineup at DH. “He did a side (throwing session) and didn’t feel good. Kind of alerted the training staff,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “So we just felt at that point in time, asking him if…
Former USC and NBA player Duane Cooper knew George Raveling by many names. Sometimes Coach, sometimes Rav, sometimes Dad. “He was one of the first guys to ever tell me he loved me as a man,” said Cooper, who grew up in a single-parent household. “And every time we got on the phone, he would tell me he loves me and I would tell him the same thing.” That’s how the two ended their final phone call roughly a month ago. Raveling didn’t mention the cancer, which claimed his life on Monday. That was typical of the larger-than-life basketball figure…
By SOPHIA TAREEN, Associated Press CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago community leaders forged ahead Wednesday with preparations for the influx of National Guard troops and immigration agents the city is expecting, advising residents about their rights and organizing protests with fresh urgency. Details about the operation are scant, but President Donald Trump has amped up the rhetoric about crime in the nation’s third-largest city, saying an immigration crackdown and National Guard deployment are planned despite the objections of local leaders and a federal court ruling that a similar deployment in Los Angeles was illegal. The preparations seem familiar in the Democratic…
By HOWARD FENDRICH AP Tennis Writer NEW YORK — Naomi Osaka kept up her resurgent run at the U.S. Open, eliminating 11th-seeded Karolina Muchova, 6-4, 7-6 (3), on Wednesday night to return to the semifinals at Flushing Meadows for the first time since winning the title five years ago. The 23rd-seeded Osaka improved to 5-0 in major quarterfinals – all on hard court – keeping alive a trend that has seen her win the title every time she has reached the last eight at a Slam. “It means so much. I’m actually surprised I’m not crying,” Osaka said during her…
By DAVID KLEPPER and MARY CLARE JALONICK WASHINGTON (AP) — The top ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee says a classified meeting planned with a key U.S. spy agency was called off after it was criticized by Laura Loomer, a far-right conspiracy theorist. The cancellation of Sen. Mark Warner’s visit with career intelligence staffers at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency represents an escalation of the Trump administration’s efforts to block Congress from exercising oversight over the nation’s intelligence agencies. “Is congressional oversight dead?” Warner, of Virginia, said Wednesday, questioning Loomer’s authority over the intelligence community. “Is she now the secretary…
LOS ANGELES — USC’s Bishop Fitzgerald had been a quarterback most of his life. But when he received no Division I scholarship offers coming out of high school, he had to make a change. Defensive back was calling. “That was one of the best decisions I made,” Fitzgerald told reporters after practice on Wednesday. He was one of the most dynamic defensive players in the season opener against Missouri State on Saturday, coming up with four total tackles, a pass breakup and an interception returned for 39 yards and a touchdown. The safeties were in a friendly competition throughout fall…
One day after a federal judge ruled that President Donald Trump‘s deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles during immigration enforcement and protests was illegal, the administration filed a notice of appeal. Judge Charles Breyer of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco issued the ruling Tuesday, finding that the deployment was in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act, which bars most uses of U.S. troops on U.S. soil. The judge placed the ruling on hold until noon on Sept. 12 to give the Trump administration time to appeal. The notice to appeal was filed Wednesday with the 9th…
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jo Adell was a one-man gang for the Angels. Adell homered and drove in every run for the Angels in their 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night. He hit a go-ahead homer in the sixth inning for the second consecutive game, his three-run shot to center field on the first pitch he saw from reliever John Schreiber giving the Angels a 3-2 lead in this one. Yoán Moncada, aboard on a single when Adell went deep, doubled off Lucas Erceg (6-4) in the eighth before scoring when Adell hit a soft dribbler…
