By CHRIS MEGERIAN WASHINGTON (AP) — Joe Biden recently underwent surgery to remove skin cancer lesions, a spokesperson said Thursday, the latest health challenge for the former president. His spokesperson Kelly Scully confirmed the surgery after Inside Edition published video of Biden leaving church in Delaware with a fresh scar on his forehead. She said Biden received Mohs surgery, a procedure used to cut away skin until no evidence of cancer remains. Two years ago, while Biden was in office, he had a lesion removed from his chest. The lesion was basal cell carcinoma, a common form of skin cancer.…
By HOWARD FEINDRICH AP Tennis Writer NEW YORK — On Aryna Sabalenka’s first chance to end her U.S. Open semifinal against Jessica Pegula and earn the chance to play for a second consecutive trophy at Flushing Meadows, the defending champion dumped what should have been an easy overhead into the net, then stared at the ground. On Sabalenka’s second chance, she missed a clumsy volley – and later acknowledged she shouldn’t have ventured forward, because she went just 15 for 27 when up at the net. Uh, oh. So good at important moments in the high-stakes, high-tension final set, Sabalenka…
By MATTHEW LEE HOUSTON (AP) — The Trump administration already has denied visas for Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and his large delegation to attend a high-level U.N. meeting this month and is now considering ramping up restrictions on several other delegations that would severely limit their ability to travel outside New York City. Potential travel and other restrictions could soon be imposed on the delegations from Iran, Sudan, Zimbabwe and, perhaps surprisingly, Brazil, which has held a traditional place of honor during the high-level leaders gathering at the U.N. General Assembly that begins Sept. 22, according to an internal State…
By DAN GELSTON AP Sports Writer PHILADELPHIA — Jalen Hurts rushed for two touchdowns for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, who lost their hot-tempered star defender for spitting on Dak Prescott, then withstood a rare weather delay and needed a late stop to beat the Dallas Cowboys, 24-20, in a wild start to the NFL season on Thursday night. The Eagles led 24-20 with 4:44 left in the third quarter when the game was delayed 65 minutes because of lightning in the area around Lincoln Financial Field. The game ended at 12:18 a.m. local time. Prescott threw an incomplete…
Trump’s promised immigration crackdown in Chicago could last about six weeks, suburban official says
By SOPHIA TAREEN CHICAGO (AP) — The Trump administration has informed Chicago-area officials that its promised immigration enforcement surge will operate seven days a week for about six weeks, according to the mayor of a suburb that houses an immigration processing center. Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson said in a letter to the village’s roughly 8,000 residents this week that the Trump administration told village officials that a two-story building used to temporarily hold immigrants before they’re detained or deported will serve as the “primary processing location” for the expected operation. She said local leaders were told the operation will run…
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Angels flirted with a series sweep to cap their 10-game road trip, but they were denied by a clutch swing from an All-Star. Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-out solo home run in the eighth inning and the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Angels, 4-3, on Thursday night. The Royals hit four solo homers in a game in which all seven runs came via home runs. Lucas Erceg (7-4) struck out two in one inning and Carlos Estévez picked up his major league-best 37th save. Angels starter Kyle Hendricks allowed two runs on…
By TODD RICHMOND MADISON, Wis. (AP) — An immigrant who allegedly evaded federal agents with the help of a Milwaukee County judge pleaded guilty Thursday to being in the U.S. illegally. Federal prosecutors charged Eduardo Flores-Ruiz in April with reentering the country illegally after being deported. He faces up to two years in prison when he’s sentenced and agreed to be deported whenever he is released, according to a summary of the plea deal he reached with prosecutors. Online court records did not list a sentencing date. His attorney, Martin J. Pruhs, didn’t immediately respond to an email from The…

By RUSS BYNUM SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — U.S. immigration authorities on Thursday raided the sprawling site where Hyundai manufactures electric vehicles in southeast Georgia, conducting a search that shut down construction on an adjacent factory being built to produce EV batteries. The operation targeted one of Georgia’s largest and most high-profile manufacturing sites, touted by the governor and other officials as the largest economic development project in the state’s history. Hyundai Motor Group began manufacturing EVs a year ago at the $7.6 billion plant, which employs about 1,200 people. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokesman Lindsay Williams confirmed that federal…
