In a July 14 meeting in the Oval Office with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, President Trump announced he was sending more missiles to the Ukrainian military. And he said, if Russia doesn’t end the war within 50 days, he would impose “secondary sanctions” of 100% on countries that trade with Russia. Neither action will have any effect on the Russian military juggernaut that already has won the war. But the actions take him even further from his promise during his campaign, still absurdly reiterated by him, that he’s a peace president. He also keeps saying it’s “Joe Biden’s War,” even…

By LEAH WILLINGHAM and MICHAEL CASEY, Associated Press BOSTON (AP) — The Trump administration’s campaign of arresting and deporting college faculty and students who participated in pro-Palestinian demonstrations violates their First Amendment rights, lawyers for an association representing university professors argued in federal court. The lawsuit, filed by several university associations, is one of the first against President Donald Trump and members of his administration to go to trial. U.S. District Judge William Young heard closing arguments Monday in Boston. He did not say or indicate when or how he would rule. But he had some sharp words when talking about Trump.…

A soundbite from In-N-Out Burger’s owner and president Lynsi Snyder caught the world’s attention on Friday, July 18. In an episode of the podcast “Relatable,” Snyder told host Allie Beth Stuckey her family will be moving to Tennessee, where In-N-Out is building an office in Franklin, a suburb of Nashville, and several restaurants in the “Agriculture and Commerce” state. “There’s a lot of really great things about California, but raising a family is not easy here. Doing business is not easy here,” Snyder said. The episode, which is on YouTube. is called, “After 77 Years, In-N-Out Is Moving to Tennessee.…

By BILL BARROW, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has released records of the FBI’s surveillance of Martin Luther King Jr., despite opposition from the slain Nobel laureate’s family and the civil rights group that he led until his 1968 assassination. The release involves an estimated 200,000 pages of records that had been under a court-imposed seal since 1977, when the FBI first gathered the records and turned them over to the National Archives and Records Administration. King’s family, including his two living children, Martin III and Bernice, were given advance notice of the release and had their…

A few days ago, my fellow columnist Matt Fleming wrote an excellent column about Gavin Newsom’s pathetic attempt to morph his image into a more masculine one. To Newsom, a person relates better to men when they swear a lot and use the term “bro.” This is true.  But the point was not that there was anything wrong with being masculine, it was that Newsom has no stable set of principles or personality traits and what he is depends on what he thinks will get him elected. To be fair, this is fairly common in politics; it just happens to…

NEW YORK (AP) — More than 5.2 million aboveground swimming pools sold across the U.S. and Canada over the last two decades are being recalled after nine drowning deaths were reported. The recall covers a range of Bestway, Intex Recreation and Polygroup pools that were sold by major retailers as far back as 2002. According to Monday notices published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada, these pools have compression straps running along the outside of the product — which “may create a foothold” for small children and allow them to access the water unattended. That can pose a serious…

When Rep. Mike Levin thinks about immigration, particularly “Dreamers,” it’s his grandparents who come to mind. His grandparents, his mother’s parents, came to the U.S. from Mexico as young kids, without formal education, money or the ability to speak English, Levin said. But they worked hard, paid taxes, contributed to their community. His grandfather became a U.S. citizen at the age of 50; his grandmother remained a permanent resident until her death. Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, has drawn on his grandparents’ stories and their role in their communities as he has worked on the Dignity Act of 2025, a massive bipartisan…

By ANNE D’INNOCENZIO and MAE ANDERSON, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — With summer in full swing in the United States, retail executives are sweating a different season. It’s less than 22 weeks before Christmas, a time when businesses that make and sell consumer goods usually nail down their holiday orders and prices. But President Donald Trump’s vacillating trade policies, part of his effort to revive the nation’s diminished manufacturing base and to reduce the U.S. deficit in exported goods, have complicated those end-of-year plans. Balsam Hill, which sells artificial trees and other decorations online, expects to publish fewer and…

By AMANDA SEITZ and JACQUELYN MARTIN, Associated Press WESLACO, Texas (AP) — These days, Juanita says a prayer every time she steps off the driveway of her modest rural home. The 41-year-old mother, who crossed into the United States from Mexico more than two decades ago and married an American carpenter, fears federal agents may be on the hunt for her. As she was about to leave for the pharmacy late last month, her husband called with a frantic warning: Immigration enforcement officers were swarming the store’s parking lot. Juanita, who is prediabetic, skipped filling medications that treat her nutrient…
