Jim Alexander: The Dodgers are again the villains of baseball, to no one’s surprise, following this week’s Winter Meetings. But here’s an interesting twist: Among the people complaining are fans of the only team that had a higher payroll than the champs this season, the (less than champion-like) New York Mets. Of course, Mets fans are irate that their own organization – and particularly President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, a small market executive running a big city franchise – didn’t go to the mat (essentially an extra $3 million per year) to keep reliever Edwin Diaz. And this is…
Following a series of off-year election wins, and amid growing frustration with the Trump administration, Democrats’ 2028 chances look much brighter than last year at this time. As such, California Gov. Gavin Newsom – the current Democratic frontrunner – would figure to have a slightly easier path to the Oval Office, assuming he wins the nomination. That being said, while Newsom has very successfully built his national profile, it would be a mistake to overlook his numerous vulnerabilities, any of which could derail his presidential ambitions. Certainly, the biggest risk to Newsom is his own record in California. Indeed, the…
Howard’s Appliance Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection late Wednesday, Dec. 10 in Los Angeles, listing up to $17.2 million in liabilities. Seen here is the company headquarters in City of Industry where the gates were locked last week. (Pat Maio/Southern California News Group) Howard’s Appliance Inc., the longstanding retail chain in Southern California that cited tariffs and declining consumer spending for its collapse, filed for bankruptcy protection late Wednesday, Dec. 10, listing up to $17.2 million in liabilities. Howard’s was based in La Habra for years before consolidating operations in 2024 to a new headquarters at 111 N. Baldwin Park…
There’s a new, bipartisan congressional effort underway to support senior legal hotlines. Led by Reps. Derek Tran, D-Orange, and Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pennsylvania, the bill establishes a competitive grant program to ensure hotlines are appropriately staffed with trained attorneys and paralegals, can provide older adults with support services, and are equipped with various technologies to provide assistance. The idea, according to Tran’s office, is to ensure every state can offer 24/7 legal help with a hotline staffed by real people, rather than having seniors fill out a form and wait to hear back. The bill would authorize $10 million — for…
The Los Alamitos Futurity on Saturday looks like a battle between two trainers with multiple Kentucky Derby victories, both on the lookout for more. Bob Baffert – with six Derby wins – has 4-5 morning-line favorite Litmus Test (Juan Hernandez riding) as well as 5-1 Blacksmith (Kazushi Kimura) and 5-1 Provenance (Kyle Frey) in the $200,000, Grade II Los Al Futurity. Doug O’Neill – with two Derbies – has 7-2 Acknowledgemeplz (Armando Ayuso), a ridgling trying to confirm he’s star material for owners Janie Buss, of the Lakers family, and Mark Davis, a San Diego electric power company president and…
A settlement has been reached in a complaint alleging Pomona College allowed discrimination and harassment of Jewish students. On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law, Hillel International, and the Anti-Defamation League, in a joint release, said the settlement would lead to the adoption of reforms designed to address antisemitism and enhance protections for Jewish and Israeli students at the college. Pomona College, one of the seven Claremont Colleges, was named in a federal complaint to the U.S. Department of Education filed in April 2024, for “permitting severe discrimination and harassment of Jewish students…

By MATT BROWN, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The House on Thursday dismissed an effort to impeach President Donald Trump brought by Democratic Rep. Al Green of Texas, the second time this year that the Democrat’s efforts to launch impeachment proceedings have been turned aside. The House voted 237-140 to shelve Green’s impeachment resolution, with 47 Democratic lawmakers voting present. The result was expected, yet suggested a shift in support for bringing charges of impeachment against Trump among House Democrats, who rejected a similar measure by a much wider margin in June. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and his deputies…
By RIO YAMAT, Associated Press The U.S. Department of Transportation has issued new guidance telling airlines they do not have to cover passenger expenses, such as meals or hotel stays, when flight cancellations or long delays are caused by aircraft recalls. The guidance, released on Wednesday, comes after widespread disruptions last month amid the busy Thanksgiving travel period in the U.S. stemming from inspections and software updates that carriers had to perform immediately for safety reasons on a widely used Airbus commercial aircraft. About 6,000 planes were impacted. Airlines worldwide scrambled to fix a computer code issue that may have…
By ALANNA DURKIN RICHER and MICHAEL KUNZELMAN, Associated Press ALEXANDRIA, Va. (AP) — A grand jury declined for a second time to re-indict New York Attorney General Letitia James on Thursday, refusing to resurrect a mortgage fraud prosecution encouraged by President Donald Trump, according to a person familiar with the matter. It’s another major blow to the Justice Department after the dismissal of earlier charges against James and another longtime Trump foe, former FBI Director James Comey, in a stunning rebuke of the Trump administration’s efforts to prosecute the president’s political opponents. A judge threw out the original indictment against…
