INGLEWOOD — On Wednesday, Nate Landman called his shot. The linebacker, whom the Rams signed as a free agent this spring, told his teammates he was going to get the first forced fumble of the season. It was a move they had become deeply familiar with, watching him punch balls out all of training camp. But they could not have predicted the magnitude of the moment Sunday when Landman’s promise would come true. Leading the Houston Texans by five in their season opener on Sunday, the Rams found themselves on their heels. The Texans were driving, at the Rams 25…

ANAHEIM — Mitch Farris has made the most of his opportunity in the big leagues so far. Farris worked into the seventh inning of the Angels’ 4-3 victory over the A’s on Sunday afternoon. Farris has allowed three runs in 11 innings in his first two big league starts. He would have two victories, but left-hander Reid Detmers allowed the A’s to tie the game in the top of the eighth before the Angels re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Travis d’Arnaud’s one-out double drove in the go-ahead run, after the A’s had put two runners on…

BALTIMORE — Take two for what ails you. Shohei Ohtani homered in each of his first two at-bats Sunday afternoon. And if that wasn’t enough to treat the Dodgers’ persistent headaches, Clayton Kershaw struck out a season-high eight and took a shutout into the sixth inning and three rookie relievers combined to get the final 10 outs as the Dodgers snapped their five-game losing streak with a 5-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. “We don’t lose a whole lot around here. Not something to get used to obviously,” Kershaw said. “But when it does happen, baseball is not as much…

California children are already paying the price for a broken food system.  One in four Los Angeles County households struggle with food insecurity. California is the most expensive state in America for groceries and grocery bills have climbed to over $1,200 a month on average—leaving many parents forced to choose between price and nutrition. At our free farmers markets in the San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys, I see it firsthand: kids going without healthy snacks, parents watering down meals, families skipping fruits and vegetables altogether. In this crisis, California’s Legislature should be laser-focused on getting more healthy food to…

ANAHEIM — Shortstop Zach Neto’s recent slump led to a day out of the lineup. Neto, who has consistently been the Angels best player this season, was out of the lineup on Sunday for the first time since June 29. The break two months ago was because he was dealing with a sore right shoulder. Neto is now healthy, but he came into Sunday with three hits and 14 strikeouts in his last 34 at-bats. “You get to that point where you start to chase results more than process,” interim manager Ray Montgomery said. “And maybe you’re swinging at stuff,…

Gov. Gavin Newsom and his fellow Democrats in the Legislature incessantly denounce President Donald Trump for trampling on civil rights in his lust for power. Their current drive to sanction a gerrymander of California’s 52 congressional districts to add five Democratic seats is couched in assertions that it would help blunt Trump’s authoritarian tendencies. One pro-Proposition 50 ad describes Trump’s campaign for pro-Republican gerrymanders as a “blitzkrieg,” using language associated with Hitler and World War II Germany. However, as Newsom, et al, posture as saviors of democracy, they haven’t hesitated to infringe on constitutional rights themselves. For instance, California’s restrictive…

By Michael Burke | EdSource Community colleges in California for years have been fighting a losing battle with fraudsters who have stolen millions of dollars in federal and state financial aid. But now state officials believe they are finally turning a corner thanks to new tools. The game-changer? Artificial intelligence. About 80 of the state’s 115 community colleges are now or will soon be using an AI model that detects fake students by looking for information such as shared phone numbers, suspicious course-taking patterns and even an applicant’s age. Officials say the AI catches twice as many scammers as the human…
