DEL MAR — The only thing missing from Bob Baffert’s big weekend was Bob Baffert. While the Hall of Fame trainer was away in Kentucky, scouting the next wave of juvenile talent at the Keeneland Yearling Sales, 1-9 favorite Brant finished a length ahead of Desert Gate to give Baffert a 1-2 finish in the Del Mar Futurity on the 31st and final day of Del Mar’s 86th summer meeting. It’s good to be King. Brant’s win was Baffert’s fifth straight in the Futurity and 19th in the 30 editions of the 7-furlong Del Mar championship for 2-year-olds since Baffert…

INGLEWOOD — As the Texans’ plane descended upon Los Angeles ahead of their Week 1 game against the Rams, C.J. Stroud’s eyes gazed downward. Landmarks that signified his childhood, fields he competed at throughout high school, caught his eye, he said. Stroud is forever indebted to the area that raised him. “I love where I’m from,” the Rancho Cucamonga native said in the hollows of SoFi Stadium after his first NFL game in LA. “California has really backed me in a lot of ways.” For better or worse, Stroud’s local upbringing shaped him into a jaded 23-year-old, a third-year quarterback…

(Photo by Will Lester, Inland Valley Daily Bulletin/SCNG) INGLEWOOD — If there were really any doubts that Matthew Stafford would be ready for the Rams’ opening day, I suspect he didn’t share them. INGLEWOOD — Puka Nacua spun off of one hit that dislodged his chin strap, but, still on his feet, turned upfield. That’s when Texans linebacker Henry To’oTo’o’s helmet crashed into the Rams receiver’s, and Nacua felt hot blood trickling down his face. “Tried to come back in here [to the locker room] and make sure I could count to 10 on my hands,” Nacua said after the game. “Coming back in here, I felt like my face was on my facemask and I was standing up and it was all the way down here to the left.” And yet, as…

Leading the Houston Texans by five in their season opener on Sunday, the Rams found themselves on their heels. The Texans were driving, at the Rams 25…
