We now live in a nation where constitutional rights exist in theory, not in practice. Yet what good are rights on paper when every branch of government is allowed to ignore, circumvent, chip away at or hollow them out in practice? Two hundred and thirty-four years after the ratification of the Bill of Rights on December 15, 1791, the safeguards meant to shield “We the people” from government abuse are barely recognizable. In ways the Founders could scarcely have imagined—and would never have tolerated—the safeguards meant to restrain government overreach have become little more than empty platitudes. America’s founders understood…

Police are investigating the report of a drive-by shooting with an estimated 20 rounds fired that was aimed at a Redlands home decorated for Hanukkah, followed by an obscenity shouted from a car. The homeowner posted an account of what happened the evening of Friday Dec. 12 on social media, along with a surveillance video. Police later said the weapon used was likely an airsoft gun, as officers found no shell casings around the house. The Anti-Defamation League, a San Bernardino City Councilwoman and the mayor of Redlands decried the incident on Saturday, saying it shatters the Jewish community’s sense…

California might have to call 911 to save its emergency communications system upgrade project. Whether the call would actually get through is another matter. While the Golden State prides itself on its innovative technology sector and the genius, in Silicon Valley and beyond, these private sector successes have yet to be replicated in the state government. The failure to upgrade the state’s 911 system is just the latest example of this ineptitude. The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) set out to upgrade the state’s 911 system in 2019. The Next Generation 911 project sought to provide dispatchers…

Starting tonight, Jews throughout the world are celebrating Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, by lighting candles on a unique, eight-branched candelabra, the menorah. Each evening the middle candle from the holder, the shamash, is used to light the flames. The first night one candle is kindled. Thereafter, on each night of Hanukkah one additional candle is lit until all eight candles and the shamash brightly shine. The holiday symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness that conveys a deep, universally understood meaning regarding the importance of religious freedom. In the second century BCE, the Syrian-Greek Seleucid Empire conquered Israel.…

Despite President Donald Trump’s zigzags on tariffs, taxes and regulations, the U.S. economy still should hit 2% growth in 2026, up from an estimated 1.8% this year. That’s according to the forecast given Thursday by Chapman University President Emeritus Jim Doti before 300 local community and business leaders at the school’s Musco Center for the Arts, plus 1,500 live online. It’s worth taking their forecasts seriously. Of 48 real GDP forecasts issued for 2025 by researchers last year, Chapman’s 1.8% forecast was one of only two spot-on predictions. The same day as Chapman’s forecast this year, Trump asked on Truth…

When Adam Schiff was sworn in as the junior U.S. senator from California one year ago, he’d already spent 12 terms in the House of Representatives and was arguably best known for leading House impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump during Trump’s first term. In the 12 months since joining the upper chamber of Congress, Schiff has continued to make a name for himself as a chief antagonist – and a prime target – of Trump, calling out actions by the president that Schiff, a Democrat and former federal prosecutor, considers unconstitutional or unethical. He’s embraced his role as one…
