SACRAMENTO — Lakers star Luka Doncic will be sidelined for at least one week because of finger and leg injuries. The team announced ahead of Sunday’s road game against the Sacramento Kings that Doncic had been diagnosed with a sprained left finger and a lower left leg contusion, and is expected to be reevaluated in about a week – signaling there isn’t a long-term concern with either injury. Doncic’s absence comes during a period the Lakers are already without star forward LeBron James, who has been sidelined to start the season because of sciatica and isn’t expected to be reevaluated…

If U.S. tariffs on imports raise prices on American consumers, should we care if the government calls them taxes or fees? Throughout his time as Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent has regularly fought against claims that the tariffs adored by his boss, President Donald Trump, are really just taxes on consumers. “Tariffs are a surcharge, not a tax,” Bessent told a reporter this week. “They could be paid by the exporter, they could be paid by the country.” Bessent likely thinks that’s a great point, but he shouldn’t drop the mic just yet. Regardless of the word games, Americans are suffering…

By ADRIANA GOMEZ LICON The U.S. Department of Agriculture has posted a notice on its website saying federal food aid will not go out Nov. 1, raising the stakes for families nationwide as the government shutdown drags on. The new notice comes after the Trump administration said it would not tap roughly $5 billion in contingency funds to keep benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, commonly referred to as SNAP, flowing into November. That program helps about 1 in 8 Americans buy groceries. “Bottom line, the well has run dry,” the USDA notice says. “At this time, there will…

With the smoke finally beginning to clear following Katie Porter’s now-viral argument with a reporter – and the release of a 2021 video showing Porter scolding a staffer – it’s fair to ask just how much these incidents will shake up California’s gubernatorial race.  To be sure, polls have yet to capture the full impact, and Porter has time to recover. She also still has strong support among organized labor – on Wednesday, it was reported that a large transport workers union endorsed her. But there should be no doubt that Porter is on much shakier ground than just a…

Missed tackles and penalties, the script of the first three weeks of the season, reared its ugly head in Bloomington. Any Bruins fan back home could see Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza steer his way through handfuls of defenders for first downs. UCLA interim coach Tim Skipper could see it too, watching from the sideline as No. 2 Indiana throttled the visiting blue and gold 56-6 — the Bruins’ first 50-point defeat since USC won 50-0 in 2011. Saturday marked just the sixth time in program history (according to data since 1928) that UCLA lost by 50 points or more. “We…

So if you’ve kept up with this column you’ll notice that we are in the midst of a holy crusade against those who do nothing but fill our minds with garbage beliefs, destroy our ability to see what is true, and encourage our worst instincts.  We already covered Candace Owens and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. In today’s edition, we feature the truly awful, 27-year-old Nick Fuentes. If you don’t know who Nick Fuentes is, I apologize for making you aware of his existence. Fuentes has about a million followers on Twitter and his “America First” show is regularly among the…

If one believes the polls, it seems that Proposition 50 will pass quite comfortably on election day. On Friday, Emerson College Polling released the results of its recent survey of likely voters. A resounding 57% of such voters indicated they support the proposal to gerrymander the state to disadvantage Republicans for the next three congressional elections.  Just 37% of voters oppose it. This is consistent with polling from CBS News and YouGov conducted Oct. 16-21 which found that 62% of likely voters supported it, with 38% opposed. In turn, this builds on findings earlier this month, when research firm co/efficient…

By WYATTE GRANTHAM-PHILIPS, AP Business Writer NEW YORK (AP) — A major Amazon Web Services outage disrupted scores of online platforms on Monday — leaving people around the world unable to access some banks, chatting apps, online food ordering and more. History shows these kinds of system outages can be short-lived, and are often minor inconveniences — such as placing a lunch order in person or waiting a few hours for a gaming platform to come back online — than long-term problems, but recovery can be a bumpy road. And for people trying to move money, communicate with loved ones…

The Inland Empire remains a political Rorschach test ahead of the Nov. 4 special election that could redraw California’s congressional districts. If you’re a Democrat, you might see a region with a solid, consistent plurality of registered Democratic voters — many of whom live in the largest Inland cities — who are more likely to vote yes on Proposition 50. If you’re a Republican, you might be encouraged by a yearslong trend that’s narrowing, however slightly, the GOP’s voter registration shortfall. Also, President Donald Trump last year became the first Republican presidential candidate in 20 years to win Riverside and…
