A man was shot and killed by police in San Bernardino on Friday evening, Nov. 28 after pointing a rifle at officers responding to an armed robbery at a convenience store, police said.
At around 6:00 p.m., officers were patrolling the 300 block of Northpark Boulevard when they were flagged down about a robbery in progress at the Express Market at 304 West Northpark Blvd., the San Bernardino Police Department said in a statement.
Officers pulled into the parking lot and encountered the suspect, who was armed with a rifle, police said. When the man pointed the weapon at officers, they shot him.
The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators learned that the suspect, whose name was not released, had entered the store moments earlier, pointed a loaded revolver at the clerk’s head and demanded money from the register. When the clerk attempted to disarm him, the suspect fired, narrowly missing the employee. But the clerk was able to wrestle the gun away, police said.
The suspect then left the store, went to his vehicle and retrieved a loaded rifle. He was walking back toward the entrance when officers were flagged down by the clerk. The suspect again raised his weapon, which prompted the shooting, police said.
The clerk was not injured.
The San Bernardino Police Department’s Homicide Unit is investigating the incident. The San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office also responded and will review the shooting.
