A man was fatally shot inside a Redlands apartment Tuesday morning, Dec. 23., and his half-brother was later arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, police said.
Officers responded to a report of shots fired with a man down at an apartment in the 90 block of Kansas Street earlier that morning, a Redlands Police Department statement said. When officers arrived, they found Aaron Richard Rivera, 36, dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
Police said the suspect fled the apartment after the shooting and left the gas burners on the stove running while the victim’s two juvenile children were asleep in the residence.
Family members and evidence at the scene identified the suspect as Rivera’s half-brother, Zackary Aaron Brodowski, 32, police said. Surveillance footage from the apartment complex showed Brodowski leaving the scene immediately after the shooting in a silver 2008 Ford Focus.
Detectives later located Brodowski and the vehicle at his residence in the 900 block of California Street in Calimesa. Members of the Redlands Police Department and a Special Weapons and Tactics team conducted surveillance and took Brodowski into custody without incident.
Investigators located a firearm believed to be the weapon used in Tuesday’s shooting, along with clothing matching what the suspect was wearing at the time of the shooting, police said.
Brodowski was being held without bail at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
