The Pomona City Council has agreed to serve as an official venue city for the Olympic and Paralympic Games coming to Los Angeles in 2028.
Organizers for the Olympics announced earlier this year that Fairplex in Pomona would host cricket, a sport dating back to the 16th century. The sport has has not been a part of the Olympic Games since 1900.
“On behalf of the city, we are thrilled to stage cricket, the second most popular sport in the world, as part of the 2028 Summer Olympic Games,” Pomona Mayor Tim Sandoval said, according to a city news release. “… We are proud that Pomona will be the first to hold Olympic cricket competitions again after 128 years.”
According to the Olympics organizers, Fairplex plans to build a new cricket stadium to host the event.
As part of its agreement with 2028 Olympics organizers, the city will offer priority advertising space for the games on city buses, light poles and in local parks. The city also agreed not to host any other significant public or private events or conferences that could interfere with the staging of the Olympics.
Los Angeles serves as the host city for the 2028 games, which will be held in July and August that year.
