Redlands won the final five points of that frame and never relinquished the momentum en route to a 25-21, 25-16, 25-7 victory over Etiwanda.
The Terriers are back at home Thursday for a second-round match against San Clemente, which also posted a sweep in their playoff opener.
“That first set was pretty intense,” Redlands senior libero Ava Reyes said. “But that’s the thing about this team. We just find ways to win those close sets. It happened twice against Beaumont (in Citrus Belt League play). … We felt the energy in the gym building throughout the match.”
Redlands (30-5 overall) had the statistical advantage in every category Tuesday evening, especially in the areas of serving and serve receive. The Terriers finished the match with 16 aces and only three service errors. Etiwanda (23-13) registered five aces but tallied six service errors.
“I knew what was going to win this one was serve and pass,” Redlands coach Corinne Flowers said. “Both teams struggled early in the match, so it came down to who could get out of that funk first. … We were able to settle ourselves down and expose some things on the other side.”
The opening set featured five lead changes, as the teams traded a series on mini runs. Gianna Corona served up three aces during a 9-2 run to help Redlands take a 17-14 advantage. Etiwanda answered back and regained the lead at 21-20 after an ace by setter Camryn Andrews. But the Terriers had the final response. An ace by Reyes gave Redlands a 22-21 lead, and a net violation by Etiwanda ended the opening set.
“We always talk about how there are going to big points or moments in every match, no matter who we’re playing,” Etiwanda coach Savannah Flores said. “The end of the first set today was one of those big moments. We didn’t close things out, and things just really fizzled from there.”
Redlands continued its tough serving during the second set. Sofia Farrokhi and Reyes combined for five aces in the frame, with three of them coming early and helping the Terriers build a 9-5 lead. Redlands outside hitter Kameryn Carpenter had six kills in the first set and added five more in the second set. The Terriers closed out the frame when Charlee Willis stuffed a kill attempt by Etiwanda outside hitter Lauren Furnald.
“You really can set the tone by winning the first game,” said Carpenter, who finished with a match-high 11 kills and a .500 attacking percentage. “So our goal every match is to win that first game. We definitely don’t want someone coming into our gym and winning that first one against us.”
Redlands left no doubt in the third set. Two aces by setter Natalia Caravia and two more from Carpenter helped give the Terriers an 11-2 lead. Jocelyn McNairy had a pair of solo blocks in the frame, and freshman Gia Johnson was in on two more blocks to seal the victory for Redlands.
“We went five sets twice with Beaumont, so we know well no game is ever over,” Flowers said. “We told them not to relax and give (Etiwanda) the chance to get back into the match. That is probably the most cohesive I’ve seen us play all season. What a time for its to come together.”
Jaydee Zock tallied seven kills for Redlands, and McNairy finished with three solo blocks and two block assists. Reyes led the back-row effort by the Terriers with 10 digs. She made two spectacular digs on one point in the second set and then provided the assist on the winning kill.
Nina Hemsley and Furnald registered eight and seven kills, respectively, for Etiwanda. Mya Yaisrael had two solo bocks and one block assist.
