A U.S. marshal and a suspect were shot and wounded Tuesday morning, Oct. 21, during a federal law enforcement operation in South Los Angeles.
The shooting was reported about 8:50 a.m. in the 400 block of East 20th Street, according to Officer Luis Alanis, a spokesperson for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
According to broadcast reports from the scene, gunfire erupted as a warrant was being served by ICE, possibly targeting a known gang member.
Los Angeles police officers were “providing outer perimeter traffic control at the scene of a federal investigation,” according to a post by the department on social media. No LAPD officer was otherwise involved in the operation, LAPD said.
A U.S. marshal and a suspect in an immigration-enforcement operation were both shot as “federal agents boxed in a target” and “a ramming incident occurred,” according to a report from Fox 11 Los Angeles.
Federal agents fired weapons and hit the suspect in the elbow, and a U.S. marshal was struck in the hand “in what initially appears to be a possible ricochet,” according to the Fox report. “Both have non-life-threatening injuries and are at the hospital.”
