SAN BERNARDINO — Forcing costly turnovers early and making a final-minute defensive stand, the Cajon Cowboys defense helped keep them undefeated in Citrus Belt League play with a 25-23 victory over the Beaumont Cougars.
Held to under 10 minutes of possession in the first half, Cajon (4-3, 2-0) made good use of its offensive time, threatening on each of its four drives in the first half, with two ending in passing touchdowns from touted freshman Marcus Washington.
Despite hanging tight with Cajon offensively throughout the first half, Beaumont (5-2, 1-1) struggled with mistakes in the first two frames, seeing three of its first four possessions end with turnovers in the red zone — two from interceptions in the end zone, and one from a forced fumble.
“It puts you behind the eight-ball and it’s hard sometimes playing catch-up with a good football team like that,” Cougars head coach Jeff Steinberg said. “They weren’t a big pressure team tonight but used it at the right times and we weren’t able to capitalize, and I think that’s what killed us — times we weren’t able to convert.”
Altering their passing game fortune from the first half, the Cowboys found success with their running game in the second half, led by senior running back Jordan White who would give Cajon multiple two-score leads on two rushing touchdowns and 89 yards on the ground.
Held to only a field goal through the first three quarters, Beaumont’s offense found light in the final frame.
Cougars senior quarterback Jeremiah Duhu countered each Cajon touchdown with a passing touchdown of his own en route to a 206-yard passing night.
Getting back within one score following Duhu’s second passing touchdown with 3:38 remaining in the game, Beaumont recovered an onside kick attempt and quickly scored to pull within two of tying the game.
Failing on the two-point conversion attempt, Beaumont would get one more opportunity with 90 seconds remaining in the game, but its drive ended on an interception in the red zone on a last-second desperation attempt — the third interception for Cajon’s defense.
“The kids executed (the game plan) tremendously,” Cowboys head coach Nick Rogers said. “Defense is the story of the day. The secondary played lights out. It was just fantastic to watch.”
Coming off consecutive losses before league play, Cajon will look to become the only undefeated team in Citrus Belt League play next week on the road against Redlands East Valley, which pummeled Redlands 69-28 on Friday night. Beaumont, which handed Cajon its only league loss in 2024, will host Yucaipa next week.
“We want to get back on track,” Rogers said. “We obviously have three games left and we have (Redlands East Valley) who’s been playing hot…. but to knock off the defending champ is big. Coach Steinberg runs a great program, so I’m excited.”
