A worker died after he was struck by a street sweeper at a construction site in Santa Fe Springs on Monday morning, Oct. 6, authorities said.
Whittier police got a call at 8:33 a.m. about the collision in the 10600 block of Carmenita Road, Lt. Mike Przybyl said, adding officers found the man pinned under the vehicle.
Firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene. The medical examiner’s office had not yet publicly identified the man.
When the collision occurred, paving work was underway, the lieutenant said.
The man worked for Pave West, said Cora Hernandez, an administrative assistant at the Artesia-based company.
Pave West, its website says, is a “general engineering contractor specializing in all aspects of fine grading and asphalt paving.”
Details about what led to the accident weren’t disclosed.
The vehicle involved has the name of another company on its side. A representative from that company couldn’t be reached for comment.
Although the accident occurred within the city limits, the construction involved isn’t part of any city project, according to a statement from the city of Santa Fe Springs.
“On behalf of the Santa Fe Springs City Council, Mayor William K. Rounds, City Manager René Bobadilla, and all city staff, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the individual who lost their life in this tragic incident. Our thoughts are with them during this very difficult time,” the statement said.
