Centennial’s Matt Logan reached that milestone as the Huskies knocked off Roosevelt 62-20 in a Big West Conference opener.
According to Calhisports.com, Logan became just the 15th football coach in state history to win at least 300 games.
“I am very appreciative for the opportunity to coach here and all of the players who have come through Centennial,” said Logan, who is in his 29th season at the helm of the program. “This really has been an incredibly fun ride, and I could not have done it with better people, from players to coaches to admin. I’ve always had wonderful support her at Centennial.”
More than 50 former players, representing 18 graduating classes, were in attendance Thursday evening to witness the moment.
Also on the sidelines was Ron Gueringer, who brought Logan onto his staff as defensive coordinator for the 1995 season.
“It was kind of magic when I first met Matt,” said Gueringer, now the head coach at Citrus Hill. “I had another guy in mind for that DC job, but Matt impressed me so much that I decided to go with him. He had that special something you want to have around your program. He had the drive and fortitude and was very passionate about teaching the game of football.”
Lonie Paxton, who won three Super Bowl rings as the New England Patriots’ long snapper, was a senior at Centennial when Logan joined the staff in 1995. Paxton was among those former players on hand to pay their respects to Logan.
“He immediately lit a fire under the defensive players that first year,” Paxton said. “I always respected the way he approached the game. He coached and spoke to every player as young men and never talked down to anyone. He rallied the troops that year.
” My parents still live about a mile away, so I try to pay attention as much as I can to what Centennial football does every season. And I can feel that same energy surrounding him…. I couldn’t be more proud to know him and to have played for him.”
Centennial (5-1 overall) raced out to a 14-0 lead less than a minute into the game. Malaki Davis raced 65 yards on the first play from scrimmage, and Andre Pommells returned an interception 13 yards for a score 50 seconds later.
It was another big performance for Davis. The junior running back ran for 139 yards on only six carries and added scoring runs of 52 yards and 7 yards later in the game. Davis also caught a 29-yard touchdown from Dominick Catalano in the first half.
Zander Lewis ran for 157 yards with scoring runs of 9 and 89 yards, as Centennial racked up 398 yards on the ground Thursday.
Roosevelt (3-3) didn’t shrink after the rough start. Blake Nadler fired a 29-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Leon in the first quarter, and Aidan Quintanar scored on a 2-yard run in the second period. Nadler finished the game with 201 yards and two touchdows, the second being a 12-yard strike to Noah Santos early in the fourth quarter.
After the game, those faces from the past lined up to congratulate Logan and take pictures with him. Logan was handed a hat emblazoned with 300. John Myerly, one of Logan’s former assistants, took things to another level. however. Myerly had T-shirts printed with Logan’s face superimposed on the body of Gerard Butler from the iconic poster for the action movie “300.”
Logan had been an assistant coach at Esperanza for two seasons in the 1990s. He had just finished his credentials and was seeking a teaching position when Gueringer hired him. And two years later, the reins were passed to Logan.
“It’s been much of my adult life,” Logan said about his 31 total seasons at Centennial. “Coaching football is hard work. It’s blood, sweat and tears, but it’s worth it and it’s always very rewarding when you see those familiar faces still coming around here.”
