SAN BERNARDINO — The San Jacinto Tigers controlled the clock and collected back-to-back nonleague September victories over the Cajon Cowboys with their 23-13 win on Friday.
Despite allowing a safety on the opening kickoff, Cajon (2-2) saw an early turnaround from its offense led by touted freshman quarterback Marcus Washington who put on a display in the opening frame, setting up his own rushing touchdown with a perfect 36-yard pass on an 11-play drive.
Going mostly quiet offensively for their first three possessions, San Jacinto (3-2) ended the first half with a seven-minute, 17-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a last-second passing touchdown to give the Tigers a 9-6 lead into the half.
Maintaining their methodical momentum into the second half, the Tigers opened the third quarter with another seven-minute, 80-yard drive, with their 13th play of the possession ending with senior running back Jomini Ransom in the end zone.
Ransom would set up both scoring opportunities and finish the night with 128 yards and the touchdown on 28 carries.
“That was the way the flow of the game was going,” San Jacinto head coach Aric Galliano said. “We were running the football well. Why go away from it when it’s working?”
“We didn’t see a lot of possessions,” Cajon head coach Nick Rogers said. “They chewed up a lot of time. They did a good job of keeping us off the field.”
Responding with their own 80-yard drive over seven minutes, Washington led the Cowboys down the field over 21 plays to get back within one score with 10:44 remaining in the game.
In spite of the 113-yard passing and 87-yard rushing effort from Washington, dropped passes hurt the Cowboys’ offense.
“He had some dropped passes on some big-time throws,” Rogers said. “He ran the ball really hard. Took shots, but again, we gotta catch balls and help him out and put him in better situations.”
In the final minute, Cajon senior defensive lineman Eugene Nolly made a third-down stop in the backfield to put San Jacinto out of field goal range. However, the Cowboys defense bought on a fake handoff that led to a wide-open 32-yard passing touchdown from sophomore Josue Estrada to senior Daishaun Davis to seal the victory for the Tigers.
Estrada finished the game with 130 yards passing and two touchdowns on eight completions.
“Very evenly matched game,” Galliano said. “Two really good football teams. We’ve gone through some adversity this week and we came together as a group tonight and showed that if we believe in each other, anything is possible.”
“Defense played really well,” said Rogers. “Gave up a couple things at the end that kind of hurt, but again, (the defense) played well throughout the game. We just have to put more points up on the board.”
Up next for both squads will be their final non-league tune-ups before their league play begins in October. San Jacinto will host Aquinas, while Cajon will travel to Permian.
