CORONA — Londyn Neal, the junior setter for Centennial’s girls volleyball team, already was surrounded by quality attackers.

Ryah Brock, playing her first match of the season after observing the CIF Southern Section’s sit-out period for transfers, recorded a match-high 10 kills against her former school as Centennial swept Roosevelt 25-12, 25-19, 25-22 in a Big VIII League match.
Neal spread the wealth Monday, as Brock was 1 of 5 attackers to register at least four kills for the Huskies (11-4, 2-0 in league).
“Ryah being out there just opens up our offense even more,” said Neal, who has been the program’s setter since the start of her freshman season. “It really makes my life as a setter so much easier knowing I have so all these elite hitters around the floor.”
Brock, a 6-foot junior outside hitter, racked up 586 kills in two seasons at Roosevelt. And she was excited to play again Monday
“I didn’t know how excited I really was until I got on the court,” Brock said. “I was nervous at first, but that went away after a while.”
Roosevelt (13-4, 1-1) played the match without its kill leader, senior outside hitter Rylee Dale, who was sidelined with an injury. The Mustangs struggled offensively and finished with as many attacking errors as kills (22 apiece) during Monday night’s match.
Brock helped Centennial overcome an early deficit in the opening frame. She recorded two kills and also served up a pair of aces to kickstart a 16-2 run by the Huskies. Jordyn Wilson put away a pair of kills down the stretch help Centennial take the first set.
Roosevelt settled in and displayed its trademark scrappiness and defensive prowess in the second set. The Mustangs raced to an 11-7 led following an ace by setter Mya Capistrano. Centennial responded, however, and took the lead at 15-14 following a kill by Asia Udo-Ema. Roosevelt kept the score tight for a while, but Centennial ultimately closed things out on a kill by Brock.
Centennial appeared in command of the third set with an early 10-5 advantage. Roosevelt put up a strong fight and leveled the score three times: at 13, 14 and 16. Cydnee Bryant had a pair of stuff blocks to give momentum back to the Huskies, however. Brock added a pair of kills in the closing moments, including one that put Centennial on match point, to finish off a solid night.
Udo-Ema finished with nine kills, Wilson recorded seven, Bryant tallied six and Lailah Thompson had four more for the Huskies.
“I think we have so much versatility on offense,” Centennial coach Joe Schnake said. “And I believe we’re even deeper on the defensive side of the ball now…. We have five big hitters and that makes us a threat whenever we go against other top teams.”
Centennial is the defending Big VIII League champion and sits alone atop the standings following its win and Corona’s loss to Santiago. The Huskies play at Corona on Wednesday, and then will head to the Durango Fall Classic in Nevada this weekend.
“I think a big word for us this year is trust,” Schnake said. “I think of the Dream Team (1992 Olympic Basketball Team) and that game that wasn’t televised (a 62-54 loss to collegians). We were kind of like that last year. We had so much talent, but it seemed like all-stars all trying to get their limelight. Now, everyone is the same page. We want to win, and they’re playing as one team.”
Nevah Anderson led Roosevelt with seven kills Monday, and Capistrano finished with a match-high four aces for the Mustangs.
