The main suspect in the April 25 fatal shooting of an Upland man at a Pomona motel was recently arrested in Bakersfield, police said.
Jorge Avelar Jr., 26, of Las Vegas is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at Pomona Superior Court on one count of murder and three gun allegations.
Another suspect, Nikki Renee Grandel, 27, of Los Angeles pleaded not guilty on Aug. 11 to being an accessory after the fact, court records show.
The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Apprehension Team found and arrested Grandel on Aug. 6 in Los Angeles while Avelar was arrested Sept. 3 in Bakersfield.
Police have not revealed the motive behind the slaying of Maximo Sanchez, 20, of Upland at the Pala Motel in the 900 block of East Holt Avenue.
Sanchez died from a gunshot wound to the back, the medical examiner’s office said.
Investigators were able to recover several key pieces of evidence and were able to identify the suspects, according to a police statement. Police did not say what evidence led to the suspects.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office issued arrest warrants for Avelar and Grandel.
Avelar is being held without bail at Men’s Central Jail in Los Angeles while Grandel remains in custody at the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood with a bail of $30,000.
