Masked men dressed in all black jumped over a gate and a fence before attempting to burglarize the Encino home of former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” cast member Teddi Mellencamp on Monday night, July 21, her husband posted on Instagram.
Videos posted by Edwin Arroyave show security footage of multiple masked men jumping over a gate into a driveway. Another angle then shows them hopping over a second gate, which appears to be on the side of the home. One of the men stops and pulls something from a backpack. In the next clip, the men are seen running away from the residence.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a report of a burglary around 10:15 p.m. Monday night on the block where records show Mellencamp’s home is located. Police say the suspects were gone when law enforcement arrived and that they fled the scene in a black BMW.
The attempted burglary was reported by someone who told police that their neighbor’s home had been burglarized and that the suspects had now come onto their property, according to police.
Mellencamp, who was featured on the “Real Housewives” from 2017 to 2020, and Arroyave posted a statement on social media on Monday, July 22, confirming that their family was unharmed.
“While we are shaken, we are fortunate to have the latest in home security systems which scared off the intruders,” the statement read in part. “Authorities were alerted and swiftly responded. We appreciate everyone’s heightened concern in light of recent criminal activities in our area, but we are safe.”
Another burglary in the Encino area was reported Monday night, just ten minutes before the attempt at the Mellencamp residence occurred. At the other home, multiple suspects were seen on security video inside the home, but after police searched the property, no intruders were found.
A week before the Monday night break-ins, on July 14, the bodies of an Encino couple were found during a welfare check after they were killed days earlier in a home invasion.
Police increased patrols in Encino in response to the recent spate of burglaries and the killings of Robin Kaye, an “American Idol” music supervisor, and her husband, Thomas Deluca.
The Monday night crimes occurred just hours after Encino residents met with police and the district attorney about crime in the area. More than 200 residents attended the packed meeting.
