10 THINGS TO KNOW
FIRST MID-WEEK GAME
Wednesday’s contest marks the first of 11 single mid-week games on Cal’s schedule. The Golden Bears also have single mid-week home games against Fresno State, Pacific, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco and Utah, while taking trips to Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary’s, San Francisco and San Jose State. The only two on Wednesdays are the Cal State Bakersfield and San Jose State games.
HISTORIC HOMESTAND
Wednesday’s contest against Cal State Bakersfield is the eighth of Cal’s current 10-game season-opening homestand that is its longest since the Golden Bears played 11 in a row in Berkeley from Feb. 20-March 8, 2015. It is also Cal’s longest homestand to open a season in the program’s recorded history.
SERIES STREAK ENDS
Cal’s string of four consecutive series victories ended when the Golden Bears lost two-of-three to Houston last Friday-Sunday. It was Cal’s first series loss since dropping two of three at Stanford from April 26-28, 2024. The run included series victories over USC, San Jose State and Washington to end 2024 and Nevada to start 2025.
WINNING BIG
When Cal has won in 2025 it has won big, outscoring its opponents’ 40-5 in its four wins.
GETTING AHEAD EARLY
The winning team has scored first in all seven games Cal has played in this year.
HITS PER 9 INNINGS, WHIP
Cal is third in the ACC and among top teams nationally in both hits allowed per nine innings (5.71, #13 NCAA) and WHIP (1.10, #26 NCAA). Gavin Eddy is fourth and tied for 22nd nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (2.0).
FAN CLUB
Cal’s pitchers have 73 strikeouts in their first 63.0 innings (10.43 per nine inning) including a season-high 15 in the Feb. 14 season opener against Nevada and have struck out double digits in five of seven contests.
NEW FACES ON THE HILL
Cal has 15 pitchers who entered 2025 having never thrown a pitch for the Bears. Eight of those – Cole Clark, Spencer Dessart, Gavin Eddy, Ethan Foley, David Shaw, Ryan Spalliero, Cole Tremain and Miles Tenscher – have made their Cal debuts with a ninth in JJ Hollis Wednesday night’s projected starter.
FIRST SEASON IN THE ACC
Cal has visits from three 2024 College World Series teams (Florida State, NC State, Virginia) and plays three-game series against five teams currently in the top 20 (Clemson, Duke, Florida State, NC State, Virginia) in its first season in the ACC. The Bears open ACC play March 7 at Duke and play their first ACC home game March 14 against Virginia.
