An electricity outage in San Bernardino County affecting almost 50,000 Southern California Edison customers on Tuesday, Aug. 5, prompted the San Bernardino City Unified School District to cancel classes at 14 campuses and left stoplights dark in some portions of the city.
Most of the district’s campuses were not affected.
Southern California Edison is investigating the cause, spokeswoman Gabriela Ornelas said.
Five outages, all reported at 5:08 a.m., according to the Edison website, affected locations in the city as well as unincorporated areas including Crestline and Lake Arrowhead.
As of 9:15 a.m., 47,768 customers were without electricity.
Tuesday was going to be the second day of classes in the San Bernardino Unified School District. The school year in the Rim of the World Unified School District has not begun. Bear Valley Unified schools were open after being closed Monday because of a power outage.
Stoplights were not working in the northern part of San Bernardino, said Sgt. Christopher Gray, a Police Department spokesman.
St. Bernardine Medical Center was operating normally, a person in the security department said.
